Hospers?

April 21, 2010

Hospers Hall?  Hospers, Iowa?  Who is Hospers?

Henry Hospers was one of the founders of Orange City and the Northwestern Classical Academy.  During the early days of Orange City, Hospers was involved in just about every business and service — he was the editor of the Dutch-language newspaper De Volksvriend, a real estate agent, a bank founder, a general store proprietor, a county supervisor, a trustee at the Academy, a state representative, and a state senator.  He also returned to the Netherlands, recruiting families to settle around Orange City.

He was committed to settling this area, and the influences he made here are still notable over a century later.

At Ramaker, we recently digitized a collection of Hospers photographs and documents, and they are now available online.  Visit the online collection, and learn a little about the man and his town, including how Hospers would cool off during the hot Iowa summer by sitting under his grape arbor and why Hospers and his contemporaries chose to settle in Sioux County in the first place.

Northwestern Classical Academy Digital Collection

March 2, 2010

The library has recently created a digital collection of materials from Northwestern’s earliest days.  This picture here is the girls’ basketball team from 1912.  Perhaps the current Red Raiders team should consider reinstating the large floppy bows on the front of their uniforms.

The new collection includes the charter subscription list, photographs of founders Henry Hospers and Reverend Seine Bolks, dozens of photographs of campus activities and buildings, and all the surviving Classics, then a student publication, from 1892 – 1906.

Visit the new collection to see how things have changed at Northwestern in the last 125 years.

Northwest Iowa Vietnam Veterans: An oral history project

April 1, 2008

The library has recently published a web site called Northwest Iowa Vietnam Veterans: An oral history project. The site grew out of an assignment in History 351: America and the Vietnam War, taught by Professor Doug Carlson. In the course, students interview area veterans about the experiences in the Vietnam War.

Nine interviews, conducted in the spring of 2007, are currently available on the web site.

The library hopes to continue to grow a digital collection about the Vietnam experience from the perspective of northwest Iowans. The library is grateful to the veterans who willingly shared their experiences with students, and now share them with the larger Northwestern community. Hear their stories by visiting the web site.
